101 Contradictons in the Bible

An amusing article from ThinkAtheist.com

It is to long to post here but click the link and enjoy. Here are a few examples from the site.

72. Matthew and Mark agree that Jesus went away and prayed three times. What were the words of the second prayer?

* Mark does not give the words but he says that the words were the same as the first prayer (Mark 14:3 9)
* Matthew gives us the words, and we can see that they are not the same as in the first
(Matthew 26:42)

74. When Jesus said My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken Me ? in what language did he speak?

* Hebrew: the words are Eloi, Eloi ..(Matthew 27:46)
* Aramaic: the words are Eloi, Eloi .. (Mark 15:34)

  1. I started to post a comment this morning, but I realized that it would take too much time answer even a hanful of those accusations. The bottom line is that these are accusations by people who have not put enough thought and study into their findings. The assumption is that we can find things wrong with the text today that people 2-5000 years ago were not smart enough to find.
Truth is, people have not gotten any smarter over the years. Why, then, do we think we can find problems in the text today that were "hidden" for so long? The original audience would have picked up on these "discrepencies" right away and dismissed the texts and they would never made it into the book we know as the Bible.
This goes back to my comments to Theo earlier. When we read ancient texts, we need to be familiar with the ancient language, culture, customs, literature, and period context. Full understanding of the Bible (or any other ancient text) is not as easy as finding an english translation as much of the meaning is lost.
I know thats a faily broad answer, but I hope it helps a bit. Short of writing a book, theres no way to completely answer every accusation. To give an example, one assignment in college was to respond to one such "contradiction" in the bible (I think someone once published 1000?). That turned into a 4 page essay.
Like I said, I hope that helps, at least that you better understand how educated people can still believe the Bible holds authority.
